Accelerated Industrialization of Bio-based PC, Low-carbon Development Becomes a New Track

In April 2026, the green transformation of China’s polycarbonate (PC) industry has gained remarkable momentum. Bio-based PC has achieved critical technological breakthroughs and entered the stage of industrial mass production, standing out as a core highlight of the industry this month. Different from traditional petroleum-based PC, bio-based PC is synthesized with raw materials such as isosorbide, cutting carbon emissions by more than one ton per ton of finished products, which fully complies with the national dual-carbon goals for new energy materials.

In terms of product performance, bio-based PC retains the core advantages of traditional PC, including high light transmittance, strong impact resistance, stable dimensional performance and excellent weather resistance and flame retardancy. Meanwhile, it features low odor, low VOC emission and recyclability, ensuring higher safety for food contact, medical equipment and automotive interior applications. This month, China’s first 5,000-ton annual output bio-based PC production facility has operated stably, marking a milestone in breaking overseas technical barriers and realizing large-scale domestic production of high-end eco-friendly PC materials.

In terms of market prospects, bio-based PC is rapidly applied in new energy vehicles, electronic appliances, medical care and optical display industries. Industry data predicts that the global bio-based PC market will maintain an annual compound growth rate of over 15% in the next five years, with huge domestic market demand and broad import substitution space. Driven by national environmental policies and upgraded downstream green consumption demands, bio-based PC will become a new growth driver for the PC industry, promoting the overall industrial upgrading towards high-end, low-carbon and functional development.
