Major Stadiums Favor PC Skylights, Achieving Both Lightweight and Safety World Cup and Asian Games Venue Construction Drives PC Panel Demand, Skylights Become Standard Design
In recent years, construction of large-scale sports venues at home and abroad has continued to heat up. From the Qatar World Cup venues to the Hangzhou Asian Games venues, from professional football stadiums to comprehensive stadiums, the application of polycarbonate (PC) panels in venue roof daylighting systems is becoming increasingly widespread, emerging as an important option in modern sports facility design.
The Ideal Choice for Long-Span Skylights
Modern sports venue design places growing emphasis on natural lighting and energy efficiency. Large-area roof skylights not only provide ample natural light for venue interiors and reduce artificial lighting energy consumption, but also create a more comfortable spatial experience for spectators and athletes. However, traditional glass skylights face challenges in long-span structures, including excessive self-weight, difficult installation, and high safety risks.
PC panels, with their lightweight yet high-strength characteristics, have become an ideal solution for long-span skylights. Taking hollow PC sun panels as an example, their weight per unit area is only about one-tenth that of glass, substantially reducing the load-bearing pressure on roof steel structures. At the same time, PC panels can be produced in large-size specifications, reducing the number of joints and improving roof waterproofing performance.
In the renovation project of a professional football stadium, the original glass skylight was entirely replaced with PC hollow sun panels due to recurring issues of spontaneous breakage and water leakage. After the renovation, natural lighting inside the venue improved noticeably, and indoor temperatures during summer decreased somewhat, with positive feedback from athletes and spectators alike.
Safety Performance Highly Acclaimed
As densely populated public spaces, sports venues have extremely high requirements for the safety performance of building materials. The excellent impact resistance of PC panels enables them to maintain structural integrity even under extreme weather conditions, effectively preventing the risk of falling fragments causing injury.
In addition, modern PC panels achieve a self-extinguishing flame-retardant rating of B1 or higher by adding flame retardants. They self-extinguish when the flame source is removed and do not promote fire spread, providing additional protection for fire safety in large venues.
Closing Remarks
Major sports venues are city landmarks and important windows for showcasing building technology. The outstanding performance of PC panels in skylight applications reflects the deep integration of new building materials with traditional architectural design concepts. In the future, as more international events are held and venue upgrade demands are released, the application space for PC panels in large-scale public infrastructure will become even broader.
