Polycarbonate (PC) sheets are widely used in sound barriers due to their excellent impact resistance, superior sound insulation, good light transmission, lightweight, flame retardancy, and strong weather resistance. They are commonly used in highways, railways, and residential areas to effectively reduce traffic noise. Because of their "unbreakable glass" properties and good safety performance, they are considered an ideal alternative to glass sound barriers.
Advantages of PC sheets in sound barriers:
1. Impact Resistance: Impact strength is 250-300 times that of glass of the same thickness, 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and 2-20 times that of tempered glass of the same thickness. It shows no cracks after being struck 2 meters with a 3 kg hammer. It is known as "unbreakable glass."
2. Lightweight: Lighter than glass of the same weight, saving on transportation, handling, and installation costs.
3. Excellent Sound Insulation: Sound insulation performance is superior to glass and acrylic sheets of the same thickness. Under the same thickness conditions, polycarbonate (PC) sheets have a sound insulation capacity 3-4 dB higher than glass, making them a good material for transparent sound barriers on highways.
4. Good light transmittance, reaching up to 85%, comparable to glass.
5. Flame retardant performance: National standard GB50222-95 confirms that PC sheets are flame retardant grade B1, with an auto-ignition point of 580℃. It self-extinguishes after being removed from the fire source, does not produce toxic gases during combustion, and does not contribute to the spread of fire.
7. Strong weather resistance: PC sheets do not become brittle at -100℃ and do not soften at 120℃. Their mechanical properties do not change significantly under harsh environments. After 4000 hours of artificial climate aging testing, the yellowing index is 2, and the light transmittance decreases by 0.6%.
