Metro and High-Speed Rail Station Construction Continues to Heat Up, PC Sheets Enhance City Transportation Hubs

Time : 2026-06-04

Lightweight Skylights, Platform Safety Barriers, and Information Display Supports — PC Sheets Serve the Rail Transit “Main Artery”

The sustained expansion of urban rail transit and high-speed rail networks has opened broad municipal engineering application scenarios for polycarbonate (PC) sheets. From station building skylights to platform safety barriers, from wayfinding signage to information display supports, PC sheets are leveraging their comprehensive advantages—lightweight construction, safety, and weather resistance—to play an increasingly important role in the rail transit sector.

A New Solution for Station Building Skylights

Urban railway stations and high-speed rail station buildings typically feature large-area glass roofs. While introducing natural light, they also face challenges including water leakage, thermal radiation, and light pollution. The application of PC hollow sheets in station building skylights has effectively alleviated these pain points.

A newly built high-speed rail station in a provincial capital adopted PC triple-layer hollow sun sheets as the material for the waiting hall roofing. Sunlight passing through the PC sheets forms a uniformly soft natural glow, eliminating the harsh glare commonly experienced under traditional glass roofs. At the same time, the hollow structure of the PC sheets provides excellent thermal insulation performance—lowering the waiting hall temperature in summer by approximately 3 to 5 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-renovation state—and passenger comfort has notably improved.

In addition, the waterproof and drainage system design for PC daylighting roofs is also more straightforward. The joints between sheets are treated with professional sealing strips, providing good overall structural integrity and making water leakage far less likely to occur.

Platform Safety and Information Display Applications

Safety barriers at the edges of railway platforms are critical facilities for ensuring passenger safety. Traditional tempered glass safety barriers carry an inherent risk of spontaneous breakage. In crowded platform environments with extremely high safety requirements, glass shattering could lead to truly serious consequences. PC safety barrier sheets completely eliminate this hidden danger—their excellent impact resistance ensures that barriers remain intact even under the jostling, baggage bumping, and other scenarios that are common on platforms.

In station information display and wayfinding signage systems, PC sheets are also extensively used. LED guidance screens, timetable display stands, waiting area signs, and other components inside stations all employ PC hollow sheets as backer panels, base plates, or structural supports—simultaneously attractive and durable, and easy to maintain and replace when needed.

A project manager at a metro construction group explained that in the recently completed metro line expansion project, PC sheets were selected for multiple station components including platform barrier panels, ceiling skylight modules, and signage back panels. “PC sheets offer a significant advantage over traditional materials in terms of corrosion resistance. Underground station environments are humid and prone to condensation, which accelerates metal corrosion. PC sheets perform stably in these conditions with minimal maintenance required over their entire service life.”

Expanding Application Scenarios

Looking beyond traditional applications, PC sheets are also finding new uses in urban rail transit. Noise barriers along elevated metro lines, transparent windbreak walls on exposed above-ground platform sections, and decorative partitions in station commercial zones are all emerging application areas attracting growing industry attention.

Particularly on elevated metro lines and light rail systems, PC transparent noise barriers are replacing traditional glass barriers in an increasing number of projects. Their lighter weight reduces the load on elevated track structures, while their superior impact resistance minimizes safety hazards—making them a clear upgrade over conventional materials in terms of comprehensive performance.

Closing Remarks

Rail transit is the “main artery” of urban mobility, and the construction quality of stations and their supporting facilities directly affects the travel experience of millions of passengers. The comprehensive performance of PC sheets in daylighting, safety, and information display provides rail transit station construction with solutions that balance functionality and economy. As China’s domestic rail transit network continues to expand and international standards are increasingly adopted, the application potential of PC sheets in this sector is well worth anticipating.
