Why solid PC rather than acrylic or glass
• Impact resistance. PC is among the toughest transparent materials in common use, with notched impact strength far above acrylic and ordinary glass. Stone strike, rail-induced pressure and vandalism do not shatter it — the safety property that matters most on a barrier.
• Low weight. At about 1.2 g/cm³, 10 mm sheet weighs roughly 12 kg/m², about half of glass at the same thickness, reducing load on steelwork and foundations.
• Cold formable. It can be curved at ambient temperature to follow interchanges and bends.
• No sharp fragmentation. Even in extreme failure it does not produce flying shards the way glass does.
Acrylic transmits more light and is harder, but it is brittle; glass is heavy and breaks in transit. For road and rail barriers, solid PC is effectively the default.

Two cautions:
1. Thickness is set by wind load, not by budget. Gust pressure on viaducts, coastlines and wind funnels can exceed urban values by more than double. The saving from thinning does not cover rework.
2. Noise reduction is driven by barrier height, position and absorptive structure — not sheet thickness. PC is a barrier (insulating) material, not an absorber. To cut reflection you need an absorptive layer on the traffic side. Adding thickness yields diminishing acoustic returns.
Framing and installation: three nodes to check
1. Thermal expansion.
PC expands at about 6.5 × 10⁻⁵/K. A 2 m panel moving through a 70°C annual range travels about 9 mm. Frame groove depth must accommodate that, and the panel must never be rigidly clamped. The most common barrier failure is not a broken panel — it is a panel crushed by its frame or cracked at a bolt hole.
2. Edge protection.
Edges concentrate stress. Deburr cut panels and use resilient gaskets where the sheet enters the frame; avoid hard contact.
3. Drainage and cleaning.
Leave weep holes at the base so water and silt do not collect and corrode the lower section. Clean with neutral detergent and a soft cloth only — alkaline or alcohol-based solvents attack the UV layer.
Documents to inspect at handover
• Impact test report — drop weight or impact test, stating thickness and test conditions.
• Weathering statement — which face carries the UV layer, its thickness, and the outdoor warranty term.
• Optical data — transmission and haze; for tinted sheet, colour code and permissible colour difference.
• Flame retardancy report — to the standard of the project country, stating class and thickness.
• Load calculation — post spacing and panel span against local wind pressure; the document supervisors ask for most often.
In European road projects, barriers are typically tested and classified under the EN 1793 (acoustic) and EN 1794 (non-acoustic, including wind and impact) families. Confirm the applicable standard against the project specification.
What SINHAI supplies
We produce 4–15 mm solid PC sheet in clear, bronze, blue, opal and frosted finishes, with optional double-sided UV co-extrusion, plus aluminium profiles, U-lock edging, gaskets and fasteners. Project orders can be cut to size from drawings, reducing site waste.
Send the barrier drawing — height, span, panel thickness and local basic wind pressure — and we will return a sheet specification and accessory list.
FAQ
Multiwall or solid for a noise barrier?
Transparent sections almost always use solid sheet, because impact resistance and appearance are hard requirements. Multiwall is more common in opaque sections (such as absorptive top bends) or where light transmission is not needed; its strengths are weight and insulation, not impact.
How long does a solid PC barrier last?
With double-sided UV co-extrusion and correct framing, outdoor service commonly exceeds ten years. Actual life depends on UV intensity, industrial atmosphere and cleaning practice. Single-sided UV, or panels installed face-in, shorten it significantly.
Do surface scratches mean replacement?
No. Shallow scratches are cosmetic and do not affect mechanical performance. Only deep scoring you can feel, or visible cracks, warrant assessment. Routine washing with water and neutral detergent is sufficient.
