Calculated from density; confirm against each datasheet. A 6 mm glass roof at 15 kg/m² replaced by 8 mm twin-wall at about 1.6 kg/m² is roughly a tenfold reduction — an order-of-magnitude change in structural terms, not a marginal saving.
Where the saving lands
Steel. Roof load sets purlin size, column section and foundation. A glazed roof usually forces closer, heavier purlins; with PC sheet the same span uses lighter profiles, and the overall cost reduction frequently exceeds the panel price difference.
Lifting and installation. A 2 × 3 m sheet of 6 mm glass weighs 90 kg and needs vacuum lifters and four people. The same size in 8 mm twin-wall is under 10 kg and two people can carry it. Labour and plant hire roughly halve, and the programme shortens.
Freight. Sheet ships by volume, but weight governs overweight limits and inland handling. Lighter panels pack more simply and unload without lifting equipment, cutting destination charges.
Retrofit. The most overlooked value. Existing roofs and canopies were rarely designed with spare capacity for glass. PC sheet usually falls inside the remaining allowance, so no reinforcement is needed and a months-long retrofit becomes weeks.
What light weight demands
Wind uplift. Light panels lift. Fixing count, edge restraint and screw spacing must be calculated from wind pressure rather than copied from heavy roofing practice.
Foot traffic. Multwall cannot be walked on. Where maintenance access is needed, provide walkway boards.
Thermal movement. PC expands at about 6.5×10⁻⁵/K, more than aluminium. Light roofs tend to span further, so calculate movement from actual length and size the holes accordingly.
Where lightweight pays most
Ageing factories and residential compounds with little structural reserve; long-span canopies and grandstands where self-weight is critical; high-level or rooftop work where lifting is expensive; and export projects where sea freight and destination handling dominate.
FAQ
Does light mean weak? No. Strength and weight are separate properties. PC is light but highly impact resistant; its stiffness is lower than glass, which support spacing compensates for.
Can you walk on multiwall? Not directly. Access points need boards or treads — a design requirement, not a material defect.
Will a light panel blow away? Not if fixed correctly. Uplift failures are almost always insufficient fixings or unrestrained edges.
