The difference is intrinsic. PC molecular chains slide and orient under load, converting impact into deformation; glass is brittle and can only release energy by fracturing. That is why face shields, machine guards and riot shields default to PC — they must deform rather than break.
Four real scenarios
Residential carports face falling planters, hail, climbing children and reversing vehicles. Glass is destroyed once; PC takes a dent and keeps working.
Workshop partitions crossed by forklifts and trolleys. Being hit is routine, not exceptional. PC rebounds; glass means replacing the panel, clearing fragments and stopping work.
Highway and rail noise barriers take stone strikes, wind vibration and occasional impact. A cracked barrier loses its acoustic function and becomes a hazard.
Cold room doors and cold chain passages. Acrylic is brittle at low temperature and cracks from a single trolley hit; PC keeps its toughness.
What the property is worth
An illustrative comparison, not a quotation: a shattered 6 mm tempered glass partition costs roughly 1.5–2× its original price once material, freight, installation and downtime are counted. The same location in 5 mm PC dents instead, and in most cases stays in service. One impact can cancel the price difference — which makes this the highest-value property in crowded, vehicle-trafficked or overhead-risk locations.
Three limits to state honestly
Impact resistance is not scratch resistance. PC is softer than glass and marks from grit and hard objects; outdoor dusty sites need a hardened surface or acceptance of wear.
It degrades with ageing. Prolonged UV exposure embrittles PC, which is exactly why UV co-extrusion exists. Sheet without a UV layer loses impact strength within a few years.
Thickness and support decide real performance. The same 5 mm panel at 1 m and 2 m purlin spacing behaves like two different products. Impact performance is material plus structure.
How to verify the claim
Ask for impact test data (Charpy, Izod or falling-ball) stating the thickness tested; request post-ageing data rather than initial values only; and run your own drop test — a 1 kg steel ball from 1 m onto a sample, then look for a dent versus a fracture. Three minutes of testing beats ten pages of brochure.
FAQ
Is building-grade PC bullet resistant? No. Bullet resistance is a different product class requiring multilayer construction and dedicated testing.
Can a dented panel stay in service? Yes, provided there is no penetration or propagating crack. Transmission and appearance suffer locally, structural function remains.
PC versus tempered glass for impact? PC is clearly stronger on not breaking; tempered glass resists scratching better. Choose based on whether you fear breakage or surface wear.
