Why cleanability is a hard requirement
A food plant might clean a room twice a day for forty minutes. If partitions or viewing panels are rough, soil-retaining and hard to wipe, that can double — and incomplete cleaning is a microbiological risk. In such settings the selection order is not cheap-then-pretty, but: does it harbour soil, does it tolerate the cleaning chemicals, and does it survive wiping. PC performs better than most buyers expect, provided it is cleaned correctly.
Why it cleans easily
The extruded surface is dense, unlike timber, concrete or GRP with their micro-porosity; it does not absorb water, so no moisture reservoir remains for microorganisms; it is flat enough for a cloth to sit against without scrubbing grooves; and with sealed ends, multiwall can be hosed at low pressure.
Three practices that ruin it
Solvent cleaners. Acetone, thinner, prolonged high-concentration alcohol and ammonia-based glass cleaners cause stress cracking — a fine network of cracks that cannot be repaired.
Hard tools. Steel wool, scrapers and stiff brushes leave permanent scratches, and scratched areas retain soil even better, creating a cycle.
Pressure washing at close range. It blows open the end seals of multiwall; water enters the flutes and the panel then grows mould and algae internally, permanently.
A cleaning SOP that works
Pre-rinse at low pressure to remove loose soil; wash with a neutral detergent and a soft cloth or sponge in gentle circles; rinse thoroughly, because detergent residue damages more than dirt; and dry with a soft cloth or squeegee to prevent scale. Indoors, monthly is typical; outdoors, quarterly depending on dust. When transmission drops noticeably, it is usually surface dirt rather than material ageing.
Two extra points for cold stores and food plants
Chlorinated disinfectants left standing cause fine surface cracks, so rinse after use. And where the panel may touch food directly, confirm food-contact compliance — industrial-grade sheet must not be used on direct contact surfaces.
When not to pay for it
Outdoor canopies, carports and factory roof lights are cleaned rarely, so standard sheet is enough. The value of cleanability exists only where cleaning is frequent.
FAQ
Can alcohol be used? Short contact at low concentration, wiped off promptly, is usually fine; frequent high-concentration use crazes the surface. Follow the supplier's chemical compatibility data.
Can existing fine cracks be repaired? No. Stress cracking is damage at material level; polishing will not restore it. Replace the panel.
Is anti-drip the same as easy-clean? No. Anti-drip manages condensation behaviour; easy-clean describes soil resistance. A panel can offer both, but they are different properties.
