Sound Insulation Solid Polycarbonate Sheet — Acoustic Glazing for Noise Barriers & Infrastructure
A thermoplastic glazing material called Sound Insulation Solid Polycarbonate Sheet is intended to limit acoustic transmission while retaining structural strength and optical clarity. Made from 100% virgin Bayer/Sabic PC resin, it has an impact strength of 850 J/m – much beyond that of conventional glass – and is available in thicknesses from 0.95mm to 23mm, with widths up to 2,100mm. With three production bases and more than 30 years of expertise in producing polycarbonate, Baoding Sinhai delivers this material to highway, rail and architectural projects throughout the globe.
What Sets This Sheet Apart from Standard PC Sheet?
Standard solid PC sheet is engineered for maximum light transmission and impact resistance. This product offers a greater mass per area profile which immediately increases sound reduction performance.
A 12 mm sheet has an STC value of around 33–35 dB, which is sufficient to lower perceived highway or rail noise to a reasonable level in nearby structures. The weighted sound reduction index (Rw) is 36–38 dB at 15–20 mm depending on quality of installation and sealing at system level.
The physical reason for the acoustic performance of the sheet is its density of roughly 1.2g/cm3. Thickness uniformity is regulated within ±5% since changes in thickness directly impact mass per unit area and mass per unit area is the driving factor in sound reduction.

Core Performance Characteristics
Sound Insulation Solid Polycarbonate Sheet offers impact resistance for public infrastructure. This sheet is suitable for anti-vandal applications and satisfies the stone impact criteria according to EN 1794-1 at 850 J/m. But that resistance to shattering is a genuine safety requirement and not a marketing pitch for toll booths, subway canopies and airport windows.
Wide temperature range with stable performance. The -40 to +120 degree C service temperature range implies no embrittlement in cold climes and no distortion in the heat of summer. The acoustic qualities are constant across this range.
Long life UV protection . The 50 μm co-extruded UV layer could be blocked by the UV below 380 nm, the anti-UV rate is 98%-100%. This eliminates yellowing and micro-cracking that would otherwise degrade optical clarity and the integrity of acoustic seals over time. 10 year anti-yellowing guarantee under general outdoor exposure circumstances.
Fire compliance. This sheet has B1 fire rating per GB 8624 and UL94 V-2 certification, and is suited for public infrastructure and enclosed places with fire code requirements.
Fabrication on site. The sheet may be cut, drilled, engraved and CNC treated without professional equipment. Cold bending is supported at a minimum bend radius of 175x sheet thickness If this rule is followed the acoustic performance is maintained.
Typical Applications
The most typical usage is for noise barriers on highways and railroads. This capacity of the sheet to bend cold serves to divert sound waves up rather than reflecting them back toward traffic. It is transparent, and does not provide the confined, tunnel-like impression of solid brick walls.
Toll stations and metro canopies need both vandal resistance and noise attenuation under heavy traffic situations. This sheet covers both needs in one document.
Perfect for airport glass, up to 90% light transmission creates bright interior areas and reduces noise from engines and ground traffic.
Clear noise-dampening screens are used to enclose CNC gear or power generators in industrial plants, enabling workers to visually monitor the equipment while shielding them from exposure to high-frequency noise.
It is used for architectural barriers and office separators in offices, data centers and server rooms, where acoustic isolation is required without restricting natural light or the open plan concept.
The lower end of the thickness range (0.95–6 mm) is used for machine guards, signs, light boxes and bathroom partitions, with the thicker alternatives (8–23 mm) being used for structural noise barrier panels.
Quality Control
Inspection is done from raw material input to final delivery. The key inspection elements are:
- Transmission Loss Testing – Certified to ASTM E90 or ISO 10140-2 to ensure dB reduction satisfies project specs
- Thickness uniformity – measured within ±5% tolerance, closely related to acoustic mass performance
- Accelerated weathering QUV testing under ASTM G154 indicates that the UV coating resists deterioration resulting to micro-cracking
- Impact testing – Charpy or Izod impact tests ensure the material satisfies safety criteria for public infrastructure
Certificates of conformance (CoC) relating certain manufacturing batches to acoustic and mechanical test findings are available on request.

FAQ
Q: What resin is used and is there recyclable material in it?
A: The resin is 100% virgin Bayer/Sabic PC. + No recyclable material utilised. Common thicknesses are 1.5 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 mm with manufacture up to 23 mm. Maximum width 2,100 mm. Length to order
Q: How much does the sheet weigh compared to glass?
A. That would be around 50% cheaper than glass for a same thickness product. This minimises structural load requirements for framing and mounting systems without compromising acoustic performance.
Q: What sound reduction may be achieved?
A: At 15-20 mm a Rw of 36-38 dB is possible. System-level installation is necessary, adequate sealing using EPDM rubber gaskets or non-hardening acoustic sealants is vital to achieving rated performance. Avoid acetic acid based silicones that may chemically damage polycarbonate.
Q: Can the sheet be used outdoors long-term?
A: Yes. The 50 μm co-extruded UV protection layer, avoids yellowing and light transmission loss. The 10-year anti-yellowing guarantee is subject to regular outdoor exposure conditions.
Q: Does cold bending impact acoustic performance?
A: No, provided the minimum bend radius is kept at 175× sheet thickness. The density of the material is maintained during the bending process, therefore there is no compromise in the acoustic performance.
Q: What certifications does the product have?
A: We are ISO 9001:2015, CE, RoHS, and SGS certified. Certificates of conformity are available for individual batches on request.
