Polycarbonate Sheet for Sound Insulation — Multiwall Acoustic Barrier Panels
Polycarbonate sheet for sound insulation is a multiwall glazing material for highway barriers, industrial enclosures, and architectural partitions where noise control and natural light are both important. These panels are manufactured by Baoding Sinhai Sunboard production Co., Ltd. at three production sites, and are constructed from 100% virgin Bayer/Sabic polycarbonate resin with a 50 µm UV co-extruded layer. Multiwall chamber construction provides a sound reduction index of 20-30 dB when placed with a properly sealed frame system.
How the Multiwall Structure Reduces Noise?
Each of the panels has sealed air chambers that collect and reduce acoustic energy across a variety of frequencies – from highway rumbling to rain impact to industrial activity. This process is the basis of the sheet’s ability to attenuate noise.
The multiwall concept is nearly 50% lighter than solid PC of equal thickness, providing considerable sound attenuation without the structural load penalty of laminated glass. Weight advantage is important for elevated highway barriers, bridge mounted installations and rooftop enclosures when dead load is a design limitation.
Polycarbonate is better than acrylic for low frequency noise. The increased molecular density of PC decreases sound transmission loss at bass-range frequencies where acrylic and thin glass panels are usually deficient.

Key Advantages
Polycarbonate sheet for sound insulation delivers long-term consistent acoustic performance. The UV co-extruded layer prevents the polymer structure from being degraded. The rated service life of the panels is not expected to alter their dimensional stability or noise attenuation qualities.
Transparency plus good control. Clear-grade panels let up to 90% of visible light to pass through them – something concrete or metal noise barriers cannot do. Highway barrier applications preserve driver sight lines; residential applications preserve natural sunshine.
Thermal and acoustic combined efficiency. In multi-layer applications, a multiwall chamber design reduces the thermal U-value to as low as 1.6 W/m²K compared to roughly 3.3 W/m²K for twinwall. One panel tackles both noise and heat transmission.
Good impact resistance. The sheets withstand hits from road debris, hail and dynamic wind loads without cracking or breaking at 850 J/m, a property glass-based alternatives don’t have for exposed outdoor installations.
Compatibility of installation. Aluminium H-profile and PC profiles are offered . For big scale installations glazing gaskets and extra sized fastening holes are necessary to handle the thermal expansion coefficient of 0.065 mm/m°C.
Typical Applications
Noise barriers for highways and railroads. Panels resist hits from projectiles and wind loads while leaving sightlines clear for cars and neighbouring inhabitants. It is lighter than glass and hence easier to install on overhead or bridge mounted barrier constructions.
Industrial soundproof boxes. These panels are used by facilities to enclose CNC mills, compressors, and other high-noise gear. Operators may also see the equipment via transparent panels and operate at lower noise exposure levels.
Architectural Interior Partitions Polycarbonate acoustic panels are used in open plan workplaces, healthcare waiting rooms and commercial buildings to provide quiet zones without losing up on natural light or visual openness.
Other applications include sunrooms, greenhouses, skylight roofs, carports, internal ceilings and swimming pool enclosures where both weather protection and acoustic comfort are required.
Quality Control
Each batch is subject to multi-level inspection from the time of receipt of raw material until final shipping. Main procedures include:
- Acoustic testing to confirm sound reduction index according to ASTM E90 / ISO 10140-2
- Haze and light transmittance testing as per ASTM D1003.
- Ultrasonic thickness measuring to verify the dimensional conformity with required STC ratings
- QUV (Accelerated UV Weathering) for long-term coating durability evaluation
- Flammability testing in accordance with EN 13501 and relevant building requirements
For Polycarbonate sheet for sound insulation, results are directly related to the correctness of the thickness. Dimensional consistency is one of the main quality parameters as, according to the mass law principle, when the thickness of the sheet doubles, the amount of sound insulation increases by around 5–6 dB.

FAQ
Q1: What structures and thicknesses are available?
A: Twinwall, triple-wall, four-wall, honeycomb, and X-structure options are all stocked or produced to order. Common thicknesses are 4 / 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 16 / 20 / 25 mm. Standard sheet width is 2.1 m; length is cut to your specified dimensions.
Q2: How does thickness affect sound reduction?
A: Based on the mass law, doubling the sheet thickness adds approximately 5–6 dB of sound insulation. Sheets in the 10–20 mm range typically achieve STC ratings of 30–35 dB. Frame sealing quality also has a significant effect on real-world performance.
Q3: Does acoustic performance degrade over time?
A: With a properly applied UV co-extruded layer, the polycarbonate structure remains dimensionally stable throughout the rated service life, and noise attenuation does not decrease as a result of UV exposure or weathering alone.
Q4: How should thermal expansion be managed in large installations?
A: The thermal expansion coefficient is 0.065 mm/m°C. Large-scale barrier and glazing installations should use appropriate glazing gaskets and oversized fixing holes to allow panel movement without placing stress on the frame or causing warping.
Q5: How does polycarbonate compare to acrylic for noise reduction?
A: Polycarbonate has a higher molecular density than acrylic, which improves sound transmission loss at low frequencies. PC also offers higher impact resistance, making it more suitable for exposed outdoor barrier applications.
Q6: What thermal performance does the multiwall configuration provide?
A: Twinwall panels provide a U-value of approximately 3.3 W/m²K. Multi-layer configurations reach down to 1.6 W/m²K. The specific value depends on the number of walls and chamber geometry.
