Flame Retardant Solid Polycarbonate Sheet for Public Buildings & High-Safety Environments
Flame retardant solid polycarbonate sheet is extruded from 100% virgin Bayer/Sabic PC resin with built-in flame-retardant additives by Baoding Sinhai Sunboard Manufacturing Co., Ltd. It has a B1 fire rating according to GB 8624 and a UL94 V-2 rating with a Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of ≥28%. When the ignition source is withdrawn, the sheet self-extinguishes in seconds. These characteristics make it a proven alternative for fire code compliance in metro stations, hospitals, tunnels and public buildings.”
What Is Flame Retardant Solid PC Sheet?
Standard Flame retardant solid polycarbonate sheets will be plenty for most glazing needs, but they may not always comply with the fire safety standards that are required for public infrastructure or enclosed spaces. This sheet fills that need by extruding polycarbonate resin with flame-retardant chemicals that provide quantifiable self-extinguishing behaviour.
It also caters to two additional frequent project requirements: lightweight impact-resistant glass for transport infrastructure, and lower smoke density in confined places such as tunnels and tube stations – where halogen-free FR formulations are commonly required in preference to PVC equivalents.

Fire Performance & Safety Ratings Explained
The fire rating of a polycarbonate sheet has immediate impacts on project permits and building code requirements, especially in public or enclosed spaces.
UL94 V-0 mandates that flame combustion finishes within 10 seconds following the removal of the ignition and there are no blazing drips. UL94 V-2 enables flame droplets for a short time that may ignite cotton underneath the sample, yet it still offers a quantifiable safety benefit over untreated plastics. All of the sheets discussed here are rated UL94 V-2.
B1 grade according to GB 8624, China’s national standard for fire block resistances, confirmed by standardised combustion tests. The firm contributed in the establishment of the Chinese National Standard of Polycarbonate Sheets, and was formally adopted on April 1, 2025.
For applications needing EN 45545 or FAR 25.853 compliance — such train interiors or aviation components — the halogen-free FR formulation minimises smoke density and toxicity vs PVC or standard resins.
Material Properties & Optical Performance
The chemicals that make this sheet flame-resistant don't change how clear it is. Comparable to regular polycarbonate, high quality optical grade FR resins let up to 88 to 90% of light through.
With a 98%–100% anti-UV rate, the 50 μm UV co-extrusion layer blocks UV light that is less than 380 nm. When used outside for a long time, this helps keep the material from breaking down due to UV light and from turning yellow or becoming weak.
Impact resistance of 850 J/m is good for the sheet, which is important in places with a lot of foot traffic or heavy machinery. It works continuously in cold stores, tropical climates, and industrial heat zones with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +120°C.
Applications Across Industries
Flame retardant solid polycarbonate sheet is used in places that need to be safe from fire and have good structure performance.
Architecture and public buildings glazing for shopping areas, hospitals, sports arenas, and airports. It is also used in smoke vents and windows for business buildings.
Infrastructure for transportation: a wall between metro stations, a ribbon of lights in tunnels, and high-speed train windows. In these places, it's often necessary to follow EN 45545 when it comes to fire smoke toxins.
Insulation barriers for electrical and industrial use in switchgear panels, EV battery covers, and server room safety housings where electrical fire containment is required by design.
Commercial and Interior: Machine guards, bathroom walls, signs, light boxes, acoustic barriers and interior decor that needs to be fire-resistant and impact-resistant.
Quality Control Process
Every sheet is inspected at many stages before it is sent. Key tests are:
- Flammability Testing UL94 vertical burning test Glow Wire Test (IEC 60695-2-12)
- Optical Clarity: Haze & Transmittance test to demonstrate no deterioration due to FR additions
- Mechanical Integrity: Tensile Strength ISO 527, Izod Impact testing ISO 180
- Chemical Resistance: Tested with commonly used industrial cleaning chemicals
- Environmental Stress Cracking Resistance (ESCR): Validated for high-tension application environments
The quality of raw materials is monitored at the receiving stage. We utilise only 100% virgin Bayer/Sabic PC resin. We do not use any recycled material mixtures.

FAQ
Q: How are UL94 V-0 and V-2 ratings different?
A: After flame removal, V-0 requires flaring combustion to end after 10 seconds without drips. Fiery drops from V-2 may momentarily burn surgical cotton underneath the sample. Both grades indicate self-extinguishing behaviour; V-0 is for tougher fire safety situations. This page has V-2 sheets.
Q: What materials and thicknesses are available?
A: The sheet employs pure Bayer/Sabic PC resin. Available thicknesses are 1.5, 2–23 mm. Custom length and breadth up to 2,100 mm.
Q: Do flame-retardants influence transparency?
A: No. Like polycarbonate, optical-grade FR resins transmit 88–90% light. By decreasing yellowing, the 50 μm UV co-extrusion layer helps maintain long-term clarity.
Q: Can I cold-bend the sheet on site?
A: Cold bending is possible, but should have a minimum bend radius of 175× the sheet thickness. Not exceeding this limit minimises stress-induced cracking and protects flame-retardant formulation structural integrity.
Q: Can burning smoke be toxic?
A: Halogen-free FR decreases smoke density and toxicity over PVC or conventional resins. It is appropriate for sealed areas like metro stations and tunnels with smoke toxicity requirements.
Q: How to clean the sheet?
A: Soft microfibre cloth, light soap, and lukewarm water. Abusive cleansers and powerful alkaline solutions may micro-crack the sheet and damage its structural integrity.
