Polycarbonate Dome Panel for Skylight & Atrium Roofing
The correct ceiling window material may effect a building's safety, maintenance costs, and natural light. A polycarbonate dome panel thermoformed from 100% fresh Bayer or Sabic PC resin has an impact strength of 850 J/m, substantially greater than glass. It has a 50εm co-extruded UV-absorber layer that blocks 98%-100% of UV radiation below 380nm. Panels may be 2.5 m broad and 4–25 mm thick. Commercial skylights, atriums, pool coverings, and spherical structures employ them.
Over 25 production lines and 3 manufacturing bases at Baoding Sinhai Sunboard Manufacturing Co., Ltd. have produced direct polycarbonate for over 30 years. The yearly production exceeds 60,000 tonnes. Certified by ISO 9001, CE, RoHS, and SGS.
What Is a Polycarbonate Dome Panel?
A polycarbonate dome panel is a type of architectural glazing that is made by heating or vacuum-forming a polycarbonate resin sheet into the shape of a sphere or a half-sphere. The curvy shape makes the structure more rigid than a flat sheet and lets natural light in from different directions during the day.
This design also gets around the problems with other materials: glass windows can be broken by hail, acrylic domes are pretty heavy, and single-layer plastic covers break down more quickly when exposed to UV light and changes in temperature.

Key Performance Characteristics
Resistance to impacts. The panel can handle 850 J/m of force, which is enough to break big snow, flying objects, and accidental hits. In real life, this is needed for business windows, building roofs, and any other placement above a person that could be hurt if the glass broke.
Avoiding UV rays. The 50µm co-extruded UV-blocker layer stops wavelengths below 380nm, protecting against 98% to 100% of UV light. Over time, this stops photochemical yellowing and surface fraying, which helps the panel keep its optical clarity throughout its useful life.
Stability in temperature. It can work in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +120°C, which includes both cold winter climates and hot factories. In this range, the material doesn't warp or stress-crack under normal service loads.
Classification of fires. According to GB 8624, the panel has a B1 fire rating, and it is also classified as UL94 V-2. Both scores show that the panel does not keep the light going or spread it, which is required by many public and private building codes.
Supply in large formats. With an effective width of no more than 2.5 m, large-span dome structures can be covered with fewer panel joints. This means that there are fewer places where water could leak in and the installation looks more seamless.
compatibility with frames. The panels can be used with structure frames made of steel, metal, or wood. With every project order, you'll get node design plans that show how the fasteners are laid out, how waterproof the area is, and how much thermal expansion is allowed.
Applications
A variety of business, industry, and building projects use the polycarbonate dome panel:
- Dome skylights and roof lights—in warehouses, factory buildings, and shopping malls where natural light cuts down on the need for artificial lighting
- Hotels, office buildings, and public buildings can get natural light from atriums and light wells.
- Churches and other places of worship—where both transparency and structural performance are needed
- Swimming pool enclosures—the material doesn't react with chlorine vapour and keeps its clear vision even in damp places
- There are geodesic and camping buildings that offer sweeping views and protect against weather and UV rays.
- Covers for equipment and sensors that are impact-resistant and see-through are used in industrial settings.
It is possible to shape the thermoformable material into a large curve without stress cracking at the dome's peak, which is an important requirement for full-hemisphere dome designs.
Quality Control
Before it is sent out, each panel goes through a set of inspection points:
- Uniform wall thickness—measurement after thermoforming to make sure there are no thin spots at the top of the dome
- The accelerated weathering test uses Xenon torch exposure according to ISO 4892 to make sure that the Delta YI (Yellowing Index) stays below 3.0 for a hypothetical 10-year time.
- Impact testing—falling dart and Charpy tests to make sure the resistance to breaking is strong
- Inspection for optical clarity: looking for bubbles, inclusions, or distortions that might stop light from passing through
- Dimensional stability: the heights of the flange and dome are kept within ±0.5 mm so that the frame can fit securely.
When raw materials arrive, they are inspected, and finished panels are inspected before they are packed.
Customization and OEM / ODM
You can make it your own by choosing a different width and frame shape, having it cut to the exact measurements of your project, applying a surface film covering, twisting and cutting special profiles, vacuum forming, and thermoforming. Thickness is chosen based on the project span and load needs. It can be anywhere from 4mm to 25mm.
Along with project orders, there are node design plans, sealing details, and papers that explain how to put the work. If you place a large order, you can get help with installation on-site.
The normal time it takes to make something is about seven days for regular orders. Sea freight, road freight, and air freight are all ways to ship goods. Central Asian markets are served by overseas warehouses in Tashkent and Dushanbe.
FAQ
Q1: What choices are there for thickness and width?
A: It can be anywhere from 4mm to 25mm thick. The widest it can be is 2.5 meters. Length is cut to fit your project needs. The right thickness is based on the span, the load requirements, and the building codes in your area.
Q2: What kind of technical help is available?
A: Along with every project order, there are node design models, sealing details, bolt placement plans, and growth gap specs. You can get help with remote installation. For large sales, on-site help can be set up.
Q3: What kinds of projects use a thing?
A: Some common projects are dome skylights, atrium roofs, circular buildings, light wells, dome pergolas, and swimming pool surrounds. All of these uses need to be able to thermoform, have high optical clarity, and work without cracks at small dome curvature radii.
Q4: How should the system handle temperature expansion?
A: When it gets hot, polycarbonate frames expand faster than metal frames. Installers should take this difference into account by making sure that bolt holes have enough space around them and using the right sealing materials so that the panel can move without getting stressed.
Q5: Is the screen good for places that have to follow fire codes?
A: The panel is fire-rated B1 (GB 8624) and UL94 V-2. It goes out on its own and doesn't help the flame spread. Checking with the right authority to make sure that local fire codes are being followed is important.
Q6: What's the difference between dome panels that are thermoformed and those that are injection-molded?
A: When it comes to large architectural spans, thermoforming is the most practical and cost-effective method. Injection moulding is mostly used for smaller, more precise optical parts that need to be made with very tight tolerances on size. This is the standard way to make dome covers for buildings.
